FAQ

Mission

Why did we create GraplLAB?

Many recreational BJJ practitioners train several times a week for years, yet still struggle to turn the techniques they learn into a coherent game of their own.

They accumulate techniques, but often lack a clear way to identify what works for them and how everything fits together.

GraplLAB was created to help you move beyond collecting techniques.

Discover, organize, and connect the techniques that suit you, and build a game that reflects your strengths, preferences, and experience.

Getting started

What’s the best way to use GraplLAB?
  • Start with the positions and situations you encounter most often in training. Explore the Library, find techniques that fit your game, and organize them into a system you can work on.
  • Don't try to learn everything at once. Focus on a few techniques, practice them regularly, and pay attention to how they connect. Use what you learn on the mats to refine your selections and gradually build a game of your own.
  • GraplLAB is there to help you train with more direction, not to replace time on the mats.
What do you mean by building your own game?
  • In BJJ, having a game means having a set of techniques, positions, transitions, and submissions that work together and suit your individual strengths and preferences.
  • Rather than relying on isolated techniques, you develop reliable paths from one position to another, know how to react to your opponent's responses, and understand how different parts of your game connect.
  • Your game doesn't have to look like anyone else's. Your body type, athleticism, experience, and personal preferences all influence what works best for you.
  • GraplLAB helps you discover, organize, and connect the techniques that make sense for you — so you can gradually turn individual techniques into a coherent game of your own.
Is GraplLAB suitable for beginners?
  • Absolutely! GraplLAB can be useful at every stage of your BJJ journey.
  • As a beginner, you can use it to revisit techniques from class, explore positions you're curious about, and start discovering what works for you. As you gain experience, you can organize your growing knowledge, connect techniques, and develop a more structured game.
  • You don't need to have your game figured out before you start using GraplLAB. In fact, discovering what suits you is part of the journey.
  • Stay curious, experiment, and let your game evolve as you do.
Should I try to learn as many techniques as possible?

Not necessarily. As a future Black Belt, you should stay curious, explore a wide range of techniques, and develop a broad understanding of BJJ. But becoming proficient on the mats isn't about mastering everything. It's about identifying the techniques that suit you best and learning to use them exceptionally well.

GraplLAB helps you make those choices. Explore broadly, focus deliberately, and build your A-Game around the techniques that work for you — while keeping track of other techniques you've encountered, even if they don't become part of your core game.

How should I choose which techniques to focus on?
  • The best techniques for you aren't necessarily the ones that work for everyone else. Start by paying attention to what actually happens when you train.
  • With GraplLAB's training documentation tool, you can record which techniques you successfully apply, which ones your training partners use against you, and which situations give you trouble. You can log these experiences from your own perspective and link them to the training partners involved.
  • Over time, your training journal and personal statistics can help you identify patterns in your game: Which techniques work well for you? Where do you struggle? And which techniques tend to be effective against particular types of opponents — whether they're wrestlers, judoka, heavyweights, guard players, or leg lockers?
  • Use these insights to make more informed decisions about what to work on next. Focus on techniques that build on your strengths, address recurring weaknesses, and help you deal with the opponents and situations you encounter most often.
  • Don't just follow what looks impressive. Pay attention to what your own training tells you.

Library

Why isn't the Library complete?
  • BJJ is constantly evolving, and no single platform can realistically cover every technique, variation, and approach at the highest level of quality.
  • We're continuously expanding the Library with new techniques and videos. GraplLAB is designed as an open platform for the BJJ community, and we welcome contributions from practitioners who want to share their knowledge. We also collaborate with experts to help develop and improve the content.
  • Our goal isn't simply to collect as many techniques as possible. It's to build a valuable, growing resource that helps practitioners develop their own game.
Can I contribute my own techniques to the Library?
  • Absolutely! GraplLAB is an open platform built around the idea that the BJJ community has a lot of knowledge to share.
  • You can create and share your own techniques, training plans, principles, concepts, and sequences. You can also upload videos to existing techniques to share your own insights and approaches.
  • No single instructor or platform can cover every technique, variation, or perspective. By contributing your knowledge, you help make the Library more diverse and valuable for everyone.
  • To help maintain a respectful and useful environment, GraplLAB has a reporting system that allows users to flag inappropriate content. Reported content is temporarily hidden while we review it and may be reinstated if it meets our guidelines.
  • Whether you're sharing a technique that works exceptionally well for you or explaining a concept that changed the way you approach BJJ, your contribution can help others develop their own game.
How can I suggest a technique that is missing from the Library?

Can't find a technique you're looking for? We'd love to hear about it!

You can create your own technique and share it with the community. But if you'd rather leave the content creation to someone else, that's fine too.

Just tap the speech bubble in the top-left corner of any tab to send us a direct message. Let us know which technique, position, concept, or sequence you'd like to see in the Library.

Your feedback helps us decide what to add next and makes GraplLAB more useful for the entire BJJ community.

How is the quality of techniques in the Library ensured?
  • BJJ is full of different approaches, opinions, and personal preferences. Not every technique works for everyone, and even experienced practitioners can disagree on what's most effective.
  • GraplLAB gives the community tools to share knowledge, exchange ideas, and learn from different perspectives. Videos can be liked and commented on, and each technique has its own discussion section where users can ask questions, share insights, and discuss different approaches. You can also choose which videos you want to see and arrange them according to your own preferences.
  • We believe that an open exchange of knowledge helps the community learn and improve. However, community feedback isn't a guarantee that every technique or video is correct, complete, or suitable for every situation.
  • We encourage you to think critically, join discussions, and share your own experience. If you come across inappropriate content, you can report it directly through the app so that we can review it.
  • Ultimately, GraplLAB is a place to explore, question, and develop your understanding of BJJ — not a substitute for sound coaching and practical experience on the mats.

Learning on Social Media

How is GraplLAB different from simply watching techniques on YouTube or Instagram and taking notes?
  • YouTube and Instagram are great for discovering new techniques and finding inspiration. But as your collection of techniques grows, keeping track of everything can quickly become a challenge.
  • With GraplLAB, you can save links to your favourite techniques, organize them in your collection, and bring them together in your MyGame section. Instead of searching through saved posts, scattered notes, and endless watch histories, you have a dedicated place for the techniques that matter to you.
  • More importantly, GraplLAB helps you move beyond collecting techniques to building a game of your own. Discover broadly, keep what suits you, and organize it in a way that makes sense to you — so you can find what you're looking for when you need it.
How is GraplLAB different from YouTube or other BJJ instructionals?
  • GraplLAB isn't here to compete with high-quality instructionals from experienced BJJ experts. The two serve different purposes — and work best together.
  • Expert instructionals can teach you a coherent system or help you master specific techniques in depth. GraplLAB helps you discover which techniques suit you, organize what you learn, and connect individual techniques into a game of your own.
  • That's why we even allow experts to link their courses directly to relevant techniques in our Library.
  • Whether you're exploring free videos or investing in a premium instructional, the key is to choose content that fits your style and helps you develop a coherent game. More content isn't necessarily better. What matters is what you take away from it and how you apply it on the mats.

Gyms and Coaches

How can gym owners and coaches use GraplLAB?
  • GraplLAB helps gym owners and coaches organize the material they teach and make it easier for students to revisit it outside class.
  • Create curricula to structure your classes, share the techniques covered in training, and give students a reference they can use to prepare for upcoming sessions or review what they've learned.
  • To get started, head to the ME tab to manage your gyms and curricula.
